MODULE 11

MODULE ELEVEN
THE ROLE OF ERROR

The unit eleven talked about the role of the (1) error and the importance for students experimenting with the language to be aware of their mistakes. I learnt two types of mistakes: the (2) errorwhich cannot be corrected by the same students while the (3) slips can be corrected by themselves. (4) Fossilization can occur when students don´t have the necessity to improve their language, so they don´t correct their mistakes, and it is stated by Richard W. Schmidt ""a process whereby certain linguistic items become relatively incorporated into the grammatical system of learners" (p 165) that is why (5) exposure is important to be in contact with the language. This also helps students to have (6) accuracy in their communication, because they practice and practice to get perfection. I would apply the knowledge in a teaching situation making them repeating the word that is incorrect which is a (7) reformulation process, then I would make my students to (8)focus on form in order to make emphasis in the grammatical structure.

  1. sometimes is difficult to recognize if we have a error or a slip if we dont know what is the level of the student, and as you said we have to correct them whatever kind of mistake using reformulation to do not embarrased students

  2. It is true what you have commented Gaby, reformulation can help students not to feel bad of commiting mistakes and correct them in a grupal way, so they don´t feel frustrated with their learning process.
